“No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62
To plow means to move through or continue with force or determination. In Agriculture it means to dig, break up, or turn over soil or snow with a plow or truck.
Plowing is not for everyone because it's tedious and requires work, energy and power. If you begin with a plowing (ploughing) job, you are not supposed to look back otherwise you might crash or be discouraged to withdraw.
This is because while plowing you are turning hard soils under the ground to the top to make it suitable for farming. Most times this job requires you to work with heavy machines called moulding machine or tractors and it involves land mass as big as a football field. Some soil are very difficult to turn and might breakdown machines, and If need be the plower may run the moulding machine as slow as 8km/h which is slow and time consuming.
A lazy type is not prepared for plowing job and may be tempted to stop or not complete the job. What a way to have issues with employers and contractors or even with the community leaders where the plowing job was taken. On a contrary, A land plowed shabbily will be mumpled in the mud.
Jesus is telling us that the kingdom of heaven is like plowing contract and it requires being prepared and giving our best. Putting your hands on the plow is a proverbial expression that signifies undertaking a new contract. In this case, putting your hands on a plow means that we have decided that we are going to commit our lives to God. We believe that God will save us when we repent of our sins, get baptized, and receive the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands. And we are ready for any challenge that comes from it.
Worst of all, we might even let go of the plow and go back to our old sinful ways. A man who did not finish the job God has given him will not be fit for God’s kingdom.
We are to Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which we were called when we made our good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12
We are to Fight to finish as the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. Matthew 24:13
Prayer: Help me Lord. I have signed for your kingdom. Make me fit for your kingdom. In Jesus name. Amen.
